Tangerang, 15 December 2025 - The continued expansion of oil palm plantations in Sumatra demonstrates the strategic role of this sector in the national economy. However, this expansion must be carefully controlled so as not to cause environmental damage that threatens the sustainability of ecosystems and community life.
Palm oil is a leading commodity that contributes significantly to state revenue, job creation, and regional economic growth in Sumatra. On the other hand, large-scale oil palm cultivation is often associated with deforestation, land degradation, and increased risks of disasters such as flooding and forest fires. Without proper oversight and balanced policies, the expansion of oil palm plantations has the potential to compromise the ecological functions of forests. Therefore, the government must ensure that sustainable plantation practices are consistently implemented.
The latest data shows that the area of oil palm plantations on the island of Sumatra has reached around 8.78 million hectares, making it the region with the highest concentration of oil palms in Indonesia. Environmental monitoring reports indicate that the conversion of forests into plantations is one of the main causes of forest cover loss in Sumatra, which has an impact on the decline in environmental quality and ecosystem balance. Environmental studies also confirm that the loss of natural forests contributes to an increased risk of flooding and biodiversity crises, especially in river basins that previously functioned as water catchment areas.
The widespread development of oil palm plantations in Sumatra reflects the strength of the national agribusiness sector. However, economic success should not be achieved at the expense of environmental sustainability. A balance between economic growth, forest protection, and ethical responsibility must be the main basis for the management of oil palm plantations in the future.
